A ridge tile, also known as a ridge cap tile, is a curved roof tile that lies over the ridge of a pitched roof. On a gable roof, a row of ridge tiles covers the seam where the two roof planes meet, ensuring the ridge is watertight. At the end of the ridge, an end piece finishes off the row.
In the case of a loose ridge tile, the old mortar is removed and the tile is resecured, either in new mortar or with a clamp. A broken ridge tile is replaced with a new one of the same shape and color, such as anthracite. This work is performed at the highest point of the roof and is therefore a roof repair for a roofer.
On an older ridge, the ridge tiles are often set in mortar or cement. During dry-setting, the ridge tiles are placed on a ridge roller without mortar and secured with clamps. A dry-set ridge is ventilating, because air can flow past the ridge roller, and storm-resistant, because each ridge tile is secured individually.
Installing new ridge tiles begins with removing the old tiles and loose mortar. Next, the tiles are laid one by one, each overlapping the previous one, and secured. End pieces finish off the ridge at both ends.
If the mortar under your ridge tiles cracks repeatedly, drying them out on a ridge roller with clamps is often the better choice, as each ridge tile is then secured individually.
